ASAP's Mission
Announcement: Evolving Our Mission – Introducing the Asian Strategic Alliance for Pneumonia Prevention (ASAP)
For over 15 years, the Asian Strategic Alliance for Pneumococcal Disease Prevention (ASAP) has been at the forefront of advancing awareness, policy, and research to combat pneumococcal disease. Our collective efforts have contributed to significant progress in vaccine uptake, policy development, and disease prevention strategies. However, as the landscape of pneumococcal disease research and advocacy narrows, we recognize the need to broaden our scope to address a pressing and evolving challenge—pneumonia.
To ensure our work remains relevant and impactful, we are transitioning to the Asian Strategic Alliance for Pneumonia Prevention (ASAP). This evolution reflects our commitment to tackling pneumonia as a whole, including not only pneumococcal pneumonia but also other infectious causes of the disease. By expanding our focus, we aim to enhance regional collaboration, strengthen prevention strategies, and support policies that protect vulnerable populations from one of the leading causes of respiratory illness and mortality.
Importantly, this transition does not change our organizational structure. The Pneumococcal Disease Prevention Alliance’s administrative framework remains intact, ensuring continuity and preserving the legacy of over a decade of dedicated work. The same leadership and administrative team will continue to drive our initiatives forward. Rather than replacing our existing mission, pneumonia prevention will serve as an expanded focus area within our broader mandate, allowing us to build upon past successes while addressing emerging needs in respiratory health.
ASAP will continue to champion evidence-based advocacy, multidisciplinary collaboration, and capacity-building initiatives across Asia. We invite our partners and stakeholders to join us in this renewed mission to reduce the burden of pneumonia and improve respiratory health outcomes across the region.
